RHEUMATOLOGISTS
If you treat a patient with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) who has a sibling that
also has RA - you can help the North American Rheumatoid Arthritis
Consortium (NARAC) solve the puzzle
|
WHO WE ARE
Rheumatologists and researchers from across the country have joined together
to form the North American Rheumatoid Arthritis Consortium (NARAC).
Our purpose is to identify genetic factors that may explain why
several members of the same family may develop rheumatoid arthritis.
Our goal is to identify 1000 sibling pairs (brothers and/or sisters)
with rheumatoid arthritis in order to search for genes associated
with disease susceptibility or with favorable or unfavorable
outcomes. The Arthritis Foundation and the National Institute
of Health fund our project, the largest genetic study of rheumatoid
arthritis to date.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
It's easy. If you have a patient with RA in your practice who has a
sibling who also has RA, please have your patient contact us at
800-382-4827. We will obtain consent, review the patient's RA
history and arrange for the patient (and any other affected
sibling(s) being treated by you) to have a study visit
at your office. We will ask you to do the following:
- Verify the RA diagnosis based on 1987 ARA criteria;
- Perform a joint count/JAM;
- Have blood drawn at your office (we supply the tubes and
arrange for shipping);
- Obtain an X-ray of the patient's hands.
Please understand that even if only one of the RA siblings is a patient in
your practice you can still help us - the NARAC coordinator will
arrange a separate visit with your patient's sibling(s).
We will pay you $150 for each study visit plus a fee for
the X-ray.
